Gap Detector Measurement Principle

Gap Detector Measurement Principle

The VE series gap detector measures and displays the gap (displacement) based on the capacitance between the sensor and the object being measured. The capacitance C is a function of the opposing surface area S of the conductors and the gap D.
When the opposing conductors (sensor and measurement target) are parallel plates, it is represented as shown in the figure, and the gap is measured from the capacitance. This concept has existed for some time, but due to the inverse relationship between C and D, and the small capacitance, it has been difficult to achieve a wide measurement range and stability.
Our company has resolved these issues with a new circuit method, achieving high precision and excellent stability.

Non-contact thickness meter measurement principle

The sensor case and the object being measured are at the same potential.
The sensor case and the object being measured are at the same potential.

In the case of measuring conductors and semiconductors.

When measuring a conductor, two sensors are installed parallel to the object being measured within the measurement range.
The distance between these two sensors (Gs) is set on the CL-7100 series.
Insert the object to be measured between sensors A and B, measure the gap between each sensor and the object (Ga, Gb), and determine the thickness (t).

The sensor case and the opposing conductor are at the same potential.
The sensor case and the opposing conductor are at the same potential.

In the case of measuring an insulator (CL-0740 option)

Set the distance (Gs) between the sensor and the conductor (reference surface) on the CL-7100 Series. When the object to be measured is inserted between the sensor and the conductor (reference surface), the sensor output becomes Ga. The thickness (t) is determined from this change in sensor output and the relative permittivity εr.
(CL-0740 Insulator Measurement Function)

εr: Relative permittivity (the permittivity of the object being measured, relative to the permittivity of a vacuum, which is defined as 1).
