Advanced Handheld Tachometer
FT-7200

The FT-7200 Advanced Handy Tachometer is an easy-to-use, high-performance, compact handheld Digital Tachometer. It measures rotational speed using FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) calculations from various signals generated by motors and various rotating machinery, such as noise, vibration, or changes in magnetic flux. Even with complex waveform signals from sound level meters and vibration sensors, it reliably extracts frequency components corresponding to rotational speed using five measurement modes, accurately calculating and displaying the rotational speed.

Rotational speed measurement, which was difficult to perform using conventional methods due to hidden rotational axes in motors already integrated into products, can now be easily conducted using sound and vibration. There is no longer a need to attach reflective markers to the measurement object or to apply special processing to the rotational axis as before. Additionally, the FT-7200, equipped with a new algorithm, can calculate and display rotational speed with high responsiveness even for rapid changes in speed, such as during motor startup and deceleration. Being a battery-operated handheld type, it is convenient to carry to measurement sites and allows for easy measurement.

As optional sensors (sold separately), you can choose from a rich variety of detectors according to your needs, including microphones and sound level meters as sound detectors, accelerometers and engine vibration detectors as vibration detectors, and ignition pulse detectors as magnetic flux detectors.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, but we kindly ask that you prepare the dry batteries yourself.

Measurement Mode

Depending on the measurement content, it is possible to select a measurement algorithm from the following five modes.

Modes C, D, and E follow acceleration and deceleration by processing internal operations at high speed. Mode C predicts the expected peak and calculates the rotational speed even when the maximum peak is lost. Mode D follows the maximum peak, while Mode E can select the optimal rotational speed from up to 8 frequency peaks.

Measurement Mode MODE measurement algorithm
Constant Rotation Measurement (Constant)
(A mode effective when the rotational speed of the measured object is constant)
A Maximum Peak Frequency Method
B Frequency Interval Method
Rotational Acceleration Speed Measurement (Active)
(A mode effective for measuring the rotational speed of an object that is accelerating or decelerating)
C Maximum Peak Frequency Method (Multiple Order Peak Tracking)
D Maximum Peak Frequency Method (Peak Tracking)
E Maximum Peak Frequency Method (Candidate Rotational Speed Selection)

Maximum Peak Frequency Method

Maximum Peak Frequency Method

Calculations are performed at the frequency of the maximum peak of the power spectrum. Typically, measurements are taken in this mode.

Frequency Interval Method

Frequency Interval Method

This is a method for determining rotational speed by sequentially calculating the frequency intervals of each degree component of rotation, and judging the most frequently occurring frequency interval as the primary component of rotational speed. It is effective when the primary peak is unstable.

Selection of rotation speed candidates

Selection of rotation speed candidates

Out of a maximum of eight power spectra, measurements will focus on any one of the power spectra's peak frequency.

Comparison of the new Mode C of the FT-7200 with previous models - Mode C can measure rotating bodies that could not be measured by earlier models (left diagram). Furthermore, the responsiveness to rapid acceleration and deceleration has also improved (right diagram).

Case Studies

Examples of engine rotation measurement using microphones and vibration sensors.

Examples of engine rotation measurement using microphones and vibration sensors.

The sound and vibration caused by the movement of the engine's pistons can be used to measure the engine's rotational speed. This is effective when the engine room is covered and the installation of the engine rotation sensor is not possible.
The pulse count sets the number of ignitions/explosions per crankshaft rotation.
(Example) For a 4-cycle 4-cylinder, the pulse count is 2P/R

Example of rotation measurement of a DC motor incorporated in home appliances.

Example of rotation measurement of a DC motor incorporated in home appliances.

Measuring the rotational speed of DC motors incorporated in household electrical appliances. For example, in devices like electric toothbrushes that have a DC motor inside, the rotational speed can be obtained from the leakage magnetic flux of the motor. By simply inputting the number of poles of the DC motor's rotor, speed measurement can be performed.

Example of rotation measurement using an engine rotation sensor

Example of rotation measurement using an engine rotation sensor

By clamping a sensor to the primary low-pressure and secondary high-pressure wires of the automobile, the engine's rotational speed can be obtained. It can be measured by simply inputting the number of ignition events per rotation.
The pulse count sets the number of ignitions/explosions per rotation.

(Example) For a 4-cycle engine: When measuring on the primary side, set the value to half the number of cylinders. When measuring on the secondary side, set it to 0.5 P/R since there is 1 pulse for every 2 rotations.

Example of rotation measurement of a small fan using an acceleration pickup.

Example of rotation measurement of a small fan using an acceleration pickup.

The rotational speed of small rotating bodies, such as fans, is measured. The vibration of the rotating body depends on the rotational motion. By measuring the frequency of the vibrations, the rotational speed of the body can be obtained.

Example of rotation measurement of a compressor using an acceleration pickup.

ft7200-13

We measure the rotational speed of compressors used in air conditioning systems. The rotational speed of compressors without a protruding shaft can also be measured using a combination of the FT-7200 and an acceleration pickup.

Example of engine RPM measurement using a microphone from exhaust sound.

Example of engine RPM measurement using a microphone from exhaust sound.

The exhaust sound of the car is used to measure the engine's rotational speed. The exhaust sound contains pulsating components caused by the engine's rotation. From the frequency components of that pulsation, it is possible to measure the engine's rotational speed. The number of pulses is set to the number of ignitions/explosions per crankshaft rotation.
Depending on the performance of the exhaust, it may not be possible to measure.

It supports battery voltages of 12 V and 24 V.

Measurement of DC Motor Rotation Speed in EV Vehicles

Measurement of DC Motor Rotation Speed in EV Vehicles

DC motors are used in various fields, and particularly in recent years, the accurate measurement of motor rotation speed has become important due to their use in electric vehicles. Here, we use the OM-1200 electromagnetic induction detector, mounted orthogonally to the rotation axis of the DC motor, to detect leakage magnetic flux from the DC motor and display the rotation speed on the FT-7200. The analog output can be used to record the changes in rotation speed with devices such as recorders, and the monitor analog output can be used as a waveform confirmation signal.

Example of rotational measurement of a centrifuge.

Example of rotational measurement of a centrifuge.

The centrifuge cannot perform rotational measurement using reflective tape because the rotation axis is hidden inside.
However, by using the FT-7200 and an acceleration pickup, rotational measurement becomes possible. The acceleration pickup is attached to the lid of the centrifuge to detect the vibration components contributing to the rotation.
The FT-7200 enables stable rotational measurement through FFT calculation.
