In bench fuel consumption tests and on-board fuel consumption tests, instantaneous and cumulative fuel flow rates are measured.

Volumetric flow rate refers to the volume of fluid flowing per unit time.
By installing the FP series positive displacement flow detector in the flow path and combining it with the FM-3100 or DF-2200 digital flow meter, volumetric flow rate can be easily measured.
Since the volume of a fluid expands and contracts with temperature changes, temperature control during measurement is crucial.

Measurement principle

Four pistons arranged radially in the flow detection unit reciprocate due to the liquid flowing from the inlet to the outlet. This piston movement is converted into rotational motion by the crankshaft and transmitted to the rotation detection unit via a magnetic coupling. The rotary encoder in the rotation detection unit generates a pulse signal corresponding to the piston's movement.

The Importance of Temperature Control in Flow Measurement

Temperature changes within the piping flow path affect flow rate measurements.
Here, we will discuss the effects of intentionally changing the temperature of a fluid on flow rate measurement.

When the fuel was cooled in heat exchanger ①, the volumetric flow rate measured by FP-4135 showed a momentary increase due to liquid contraction caused by the cooling. Subsequently, as the T2 temperature stabilized, the volumetric flow rate measured by FP-4135 stabilized, but the flow rate decreased. This is due to the increased density of the liquid cooled by heat exchanger ① (making it harder to flow) and the increased pressure loss caused by the cooling and contraction of pipes and fittings in the flow path.

Temperature changes in the fuel affect volumetric flow rate measurements. When measuring volumetric flow rate, it is important to use temperature control devices to maintain a constant fluid temperature and to use insulation materials in the piping to block the effects of changes in ambient temperature.

Our High-Precision Fuel Flow Measurement System utilizes a piping configuration and installation that suppresses temperature fluctuations, achieving reliable and highly accurate flow rate measurement.

Test conditions

  • Keep the fuel flowing at a constant rate.

  • Initially, no cooling water is flowed through heat exchanger ①.

  • At the time 10 s in the time series graph, 15°C cooling water is rapidly introduced into heat exchanger ①.
