There is no effect from surface roughness or irregularities. However, rotating bodies with irregularities (such as gears) are affected. Measurements using laser Doppler assess the velocity components present on the target surface. Therefore, even if there are irregularities on the target surface, the velocity components due to vibrations are the same across all parts of the irregularities, so they are fundamentally not affected.

However, in the case of uneven surfaces of rotating bodies, the direction of laser reflection can significantly deviate, making measurement difficult. Essentially, as long as the reflected beam returns to the light receiving element (and the signal level indicator does not disappear), measurement is possible.
