CF-5200 Frequently Asked Questions

Question number FAQ-0395

I'd like an explanation of the difference between 1/1 and 1/3 octave analysis.

(The bandwidths being analyzed are different, and the 1/3 version has a narrower bandwidth.)

The center frequency of a 1/1 OCT is considered relative to the 1kHz band; the adjacent bands will have a ratio of 2x or 1/2x (2kHz, 4kHz, 500Hz, 250Hz, etc.).

Similarly, 1/3OCT is 3√2 = approximately 1.26 times, or 1/3√2 times.

This is designated as a band number by standards such as JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards).
