CF-5200 Frequently Asked Questions

Question number FAQ-0403

What is the difference between 1/1 and 1/3 OCT analysis?

The frequency bandwidth displayed for analysis is different.

Bands are referred to by their center frequency or by band number N0.

An octave means double, and the center frequency is 1000 Hz as the baseline. Below that is 500 Hz, below that is 250 Hz, above that is 2000 Hz, 4000 Hz, and so on.

The bandwidth is narrower for a 1/3 octave than for a 1/1 octave.
In contrast, FFT (Frequency Transform) has a much narrower bandwidth.
