Capacitance Thickness Gauge / Displacement Gauge Frequently Asked Questions

Question Number FAQ-1431

I want to connect to the computer with RS-232C, but the communication is not going well.

If communication cannot be established even after connecting a PC and a measuring instrument via RS-232C, please check the following items in order.

1. Physical connection (cables and wiring)

Checking for wire breaks and poor contact

Please check for any cable breaks or poor connector contacts. Particular attention is required if they are used in moving parts.

 ・Types of wiring

For the connection between the PC and the measuring instrument, please normally use a 'cross-wired' cable. Our cables are cross-wired.

 2. Communication settings (baud rate, terminator, etc.)

• Matching settings

Please ensure that communication settings such as baud rate, data bits, and parity match perfectly on both devices. If there is a mismatch, communication will not be established.

 Baud rate adjustment

If the communication speed is too fast, errors are more likely to occur. In case of trouble, please try lowering the speed to 9600bps or 4800bps to see if it improves the situation.

 Terminator (Line Break Code)

Please configure the settings correctly according to the device specifications (such as CR+LF or CR). Incorrect settings may cause no response or errors.

 3. PC-side Settings and Drivers

• COM port number

Please check the assigned COM port number in the Device Manager. When using a USB adapter cable, the number may change depending on the connection port or after a system restart.

 USB converter driver

Please check if the converter driver is installed correctly and if it is the latest version compatible with your operating system (Windows 10/11, etc.).

4. Command Transmission and Timing

Syntax and Order

Please check if the command contains any unnecessary characters (such as spaces or NULLs).

 Wait time (transmission interval)

When sending commands continuously, please either confirm the response or allow for an appropriate wait time. If the interval is too short, the measuring instrument may not be able to process the commands.

 ・Restart the device

If the connection becomes unstable, please restart both devices to clear the buffer and then try again.

Please use general-purpose communication software to send simple commands and verify the responses. This will allow you to determine whether the issue lies within the created program or the device settings themselves.
