When the measurement target is a conductor, most can be measured, but those with significant surface irregularities can result in measurement errors.

Objects made of a single material can be measured without any problems.
Even if multiple materials are bonded together, if there is conductivity in between, it can be measured.
Even insulators that are covered with a conductive surface can have their total thickness measured.
Even if there are gaps inside, if the surface is flat on the conductor, the total thickness can be measured.
If gaps appear on the surface and the surface is uneven, measurement errors will occur due to the effects of the unevenness. When there are bumps, the measured value will be closer to the average distance including the bumps rather than the distance to the flat part, so caution is required.
