Capacitive Thickness Gauges and Displacement Gauges: Frequently Asked Questions

Question number FAQ-0158

What materials can the VE series gap detector measure?

  • conductor
The material and surface condition do not matter. Materials with a wire resistivity of a few kiloohms/cm or less can be measured directly. In addition, even insulators can have their total thickness measured if their surface is covered with a conductor.

  • semiconductor
While silicon-based wafers are generally fine, gallium arsenide-based and sapphire-based wafers may or may not be measurable based on their resistivity. Please contact us for details.

  • insulator
Glass, polyethylene, polypropylene, and other plastics. (Thin objects composed of a single material with uniform properties are the objects of measurement.)
