The measurement surface of the VE series gap detector consists of a three-layer electrode structure, as shown in the figure: "measurement electrode," "guard electrode," and "sensor case." The "measurement electrode" is the electrode used to measure capacitance and is less than 1/3 of the sensor diameter, depending on the type. The "guard electrode" is an electrode that ensures the linearity of the sensor by preventing the electric field lines from the measurement electrode from spreading outward. The red dotted lines in the figure represent the electric field lines emanating from the guard electrode. Thanks to this, the electric field lines shown in blue that come from the measurement electrode can head straight towards the conductor, allowing for high-precision measurements with good linearity.
