Capacitive Thickness Gauges and Displacement Gauges: Frequently Asked Questions
Question number FAQ-0146
I want to measure shaft runout with the VE series gap detector, but the measurement surface is naturally curved. How much will this affect the measurement accuracy?
The VE series gap detector is calibration on a flat surface, so errors will occur when measuring curved surfaces such as the sides of an axis.
For example, if the axis is rotated with an initial measurement of 1200 μm, and a runout of 400 μm is measured, the runout will have an error of 0.8%/FS for an axis with a diameter of 20 mm and an error of 0.2%/FS for an axis with a diameter of 100 mm. However, since the displacement error changes almost linearly, it is possible to correct it to some extent after measurement.

Example of error when using the VE-1520 sensor
(Measurement range: 150–1500 μm)
