We recommend that VE series gap detectors be mounted as perpendicular as possible to the object being measured.

If the VE series gap detector is tilted, measurement errors will occur. When tilted, the gap value will be measured smaller, and the thickness measurement will be measured larger. This is because, when the VE sensor is tilted, the electric field lines emanating from the VE sensor do not reach the measurement sample straight, and the measurement area on the measurement sample changes. The graph below shows an example of how errors manifest when the gap changes while the VE sensor is tilted. When the gap is more than half of the measurement range, the error is not very noticeable, but when the gap is less than half, the error becomes significant. It is recommended that the sensor be mounted as perpendicular as possible to the object being measured.
