4-channel beamforming sound source visualization system
Rental only (sales ended)
BF-3200/MI-5420A/BF-0310

System configuration example

The 4-channel beamforming sound source visualization system is a method that obtains sound pressure distribution from phase difference information from the sound source to the microphone and visualizes it using a color map. In beamforming, dozens or even hundreds of microphones are often used to adapt to wider bandwidths of sound, and the system tends to be large. Our "4-channel beamforming" system achieves real-time sound visualization with just four microphones.

* The sound source visualization systems (BF-3200 / MI-5420A / BF-0310) have been discontinued. The 4-channel beamforming sound source visualization system is available as a rental product. Please contact your nearest sales office for details.

Features

  • Achieves measurement across a wide range of analysis frequencies.
Analysis frequency 500 Hz to 8 kHz*Sound source detection is possible.
    *Recommended analysis frequency

  • Sound source detection is possible with four microphones.
By employing a new method for beamforming calculations, the sound source location can be accurately captured even with fewer microphones.

  • Real-time monitoring of the audio source status (more than 20 times/second)
Because it has good tracking capabilities for sound source location, it is possible to visualize both steady-state and transient sounds.

  • Wider field of view enables close-range measurement.
Short-range measurements reduce reflected waves and environmental impacts, making it easier to ensure a good signal-to-noise ratio.
This makes it possible to determine the location of sound sources even in environments where visualizing sound sources was previously difficult.

System Configuration

  • System Configuration

The measurement unit consists of a system based on the Data Station DS-3200 combined with the MI-5420A microphone probe for source visualization, allowing two types of microphones—120 mm and 60 mm—to be swapped according to the analysis frequency. The data station's 4-channel connects to a microphone probe for sound source visualization. By adding 4 channels, you can connect Accelerometer or rotation sensors to monitor vibration waveforms and rotation speeds while connecting. For measurement and analysis, we use 4-channel beamforming software (BF-3200/BF-0310) and the Oscope time-series data analysis tool.

Measurement in combination with other sensors (example of expansion)

In addition to the sound source visualization microphone probe (using 4 channels), it is possible to input from other sensors (up to 8 channels), enabling multifaceted analysis.

Software Configuration

Two software programs that make up the sound source visualization system

The software can be selected according to your purpose. For rapid problem-solving in the field, the BF-3200 (BF Monitor) is the basic package. Adding the optional BF-0310 (BF Offline Analysis) provides convenient features such as changing the number of color map divisions, narrowband visualization, and smoothing, enabling more detailed analysis. (Oscope is required separately.)

Measurement Examples

The sound of a car door closing

The sound produced when a door closes includes not only sounds in the low frequency range below 500 Hz, but also sounds above 1 kHz, such as latching noises, which are mixed together with a timing difference of 10 ms. The origin of each sound is visualized using a 4-channel beamforming sound source visualization system.

The BF-3200 allows you to monitor the sound source location in real time. With a rendering speed of 20 fps or higher, it can track transient sounds. For example, in the case of a door closing sound, you can see the sound source in the order of latch → around the door → ground.

We will perform offline analysis of the recorded data using Oscope. Since BF-0310 is software plugged into Oscope, it is possible to determine the sound source location while combining it with other analysis results. From the time waveform and frequency analysis results in the figure below, the sound pressure is high in the 1 kHz to 2.5 kHz band at timings A and B. Focusing on this timing and band, when we visualize the sound source, we can see that A is a latching sound and B is a door hitting sound.

  • Car door closing sound No. 1
  • Car door closing sound No. 2
  • A Latch sound
  • B. Door slamming sound

Even sounds that the human ear perceives as a single entity can be analyzed in more detail over time and frequency to determine which parts of the sound are being generated at which points in time and across which frequency ranges. This can provide clues, for example, about which components need to be redesigned when improving sound quality, thus contributing to a shorter improvement process.

*7 Definition of the Visualization Frequency Band
Definition 1: In a free sound field, when the distance between the sound source and the microphone is 1 m, the spatial resolution until the sound attenuation from the center of the sound source reaches -6 dB must be within the wavelength or within 30 cm.
Definition 2: The target scope size must be at least 1/3 of the camera's field of view.
Even outside the visible frequency band range, analysis is possible for 1/3 octave bands with center frequencies from 315 Hz to 16 kHz.
*8 This applies when the frequency band is within the visible frequency range.
*9 This differs from the beamforming visualization frequency band.
*10 Depending on the play mode, it is possible to play bfm files included in Ver1.3 or later.
*11 Oscope Basic or higher, and the video option are required.
*12 To output to O-Chart, O-Chart Ver3.6 (sold separately) is required.
*13 Adjust the frame length using the force window.

DS-3000 Data Station

The DS-3000 series data station is a PC-based, high-performance, and feature-rich FFT analyzer. While inheriting the high-speed processing capabilities, high reliability, and user-friendly operation cultivated over the years, it further accelerates processing speed, increasing real-time analysis capabilities to more than double that of previous models (DS-2000 series).
We offer two types of units: a 40 kHz unit that excels at acoustic and vibration measurement, and a 100 kHz unit that excels at ultrasonic measurement and frequency response measurement. This allows for the simultaneous measurement of minute signals that were previously difficult to measure, across multiple channels and a wide frequency range.
