From September 8th to 13th, the "Student Formula Japan 2025" competition was held at Aichi Sky Expo (Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture), organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan. This competition brings together racing cars created by students from universities in Japan and abroad, competing in vehicle inspection, static judging, and dynamic judging. As in previous years, our company provided the prize for the "Overall Excellence Award" in the overall awards, and was also in charge of noise judging within the vehicle inspection working group.

Report from the 2022 tournament

  • 2022 Tournament Report_No.1

From September 6th to 10th, the "Student Formula Japan 2022" competition, organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, was held at Ecopa (Ogasayama Sports Park) in Shizuoka Prefecture.

"Student Formula" is an event where teams of students build racing cars in one year and compete based on their overall manufacturing capabilities, including vehicle planning, design, and cost management. It started in the United States in 1981 to give students the opportunity to "make things," and has now grown into an international competition, with events held in the UK, Australia, Germany, and other countries.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, last year's competition was judged only on static judging (the 18th competition in 2020 was cancelled), making this effectively the first competition in three years.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of this event, and our company has been supporting it since the very first one. As in previous years, we were in charge of the "noise level inspection" for vehicle inspections, but the measurements were carried out under intermittent heavy rain from the first day. However, when the sun came out, the heat became unbearable...

For vehicles equipped with reciprocating engines, the following regulations are stipulated for noise testing:
- Measure the proximity noise when the engine reaches the previously declared rotational speed (idling and specified RPM).
- Passed if within the specified values (idling: 103 dB(c), specified RPM: 110 dB(c)).
- The sound level meter is installed at a 45-degree angle to the exhaust pipe outlet and 50 centimeters away from it (installed by the vehicle inspector).

2022 Tournament Report_No.4

The LA-7500 was used for noise level testing.

The equipment used was the high-performance sound level meter "LA-7500". There were a few vehicles that couldn't pass the above conditions no matter how many times they tried. The students gradually began to get anxious. We breathed a sigh of relief when we saw the smiles on the faces of the students who finally cleared the regulations after repeated trial and error. It was impressive to see the innocent faces of the students gradually change into those of "engineers".

Incidentally, the team that won the overall excellence award this time was "Kyoto Institute of Technology," with a total score of 913.57 points. They achieved an impressive record, winning first place in the Design Award, Cost Award, Presentation Award, Skid Pad Award, Autocross Award, and Endurance Driving Award, as well as the special Jump Up Award. Our company also sponsored the overall excellence award.
