FAMS-R6, released in 2023 as the next-generation product in the FAMS series of Automatic Measurement Control System is the subject of this article. We gathered two people involved in its planning and development to delve into the behind-the-scenes story of this large-scale project, one of the largest within the company, spanning multiple departments.

What kind of product is the FAMS-R6?

Inoue

The FAMS series, including the FAMS-R6, is a system for measuring and testing various products, primarily automobiles. When purchasing a car, you might consider catalog figures such as fuel efficiency and emissions as criteria; the FAMS series plays a role in measuring and quantifying all such performance aspects and controlling product behavior according to test conditions. We began selling the FAMS series in 1984, and the FAMS-R6 is the sixth generation product. The FAMS series contributes to improving product performance and shortening development time in more than 10 countries worldwide, mainly in the automotive industry.

Is this product intended for the automotive industry?

Inoue

While the main market is the automotive industry, the FAMS series is also widely used in the agricultural and construction machinery industries, the marine industry, and other sectors. Because the FAMS series is based on a common platform, various functions can be added, allowing for customization and installation of features tailored to specific industries and products.

Iwata

Until now, our focus has been primarily on internal combustion engines, but in recent years, with the rise of HEVs and BEVs, there has been an increasing need for additional functions to support motor measurement. Since we can add functions even after purchase, it is possible to upgrade your existing internal combustion engine-dedicated equipment to support motors as well.

So it can meet a variety of development needs. What are the features of this product?

Iwata

By consolidating the units compared to the previous model, the chassis has become more compact, and processing speed has been increased by eliminating communication between units. We also put a lot of effort into the UI, prioritizing ease of use for our customers. We have reduced unnecessary steps to shorten operation time, even by just one click, and we have fully incorporated the opinions of the younger generation of digital natives who are familiar with smartphones and other devices regarding screen layout and visibility. As a result, we believe we have been able to create a product that is easy for new employees and young employees with little experience to use.

Inoue

Because the operation has changed from the previous model, some customers who are used to the previous model may find it difficult to use at first. However, the usability has actually improved significantly, so we believe you will increasingly appreciate the benefits as you get used to it.

It seems you're putting a lot of effort into the added value of ease of use.

Inoue

That's right. I also placed great importance on branding, so I collaborated with the design team to create a design that embodies the "Ono Sokki FAMS brand." Furthermore, by adding the FAMS-R6 Lite, which has optimized functionality and is priced more affordably than previous models, to our lineup, we have made efforts to be of service to even more customers.

Drawing on experience from large-scale projects

What were some of the challenges you faced while working on this development project?

Shimazaki

Having previously worked extensively in product development for the measurement equipment segment, this was my first time being in charge of a custom-made testing system like the FAMS series. When development of this product began, I volunteered, hoping to utilize my development experience. However, I lacked product knowledge and had to build connections with stakeholders from scratch, which was challenging. Nevertheless, it was a valuable opportunity for technology transfer and talent development, as I was able to work alongside younger members, teaching them about the development process and the purpose of the tests.

Inoue

As the project planner, the large scale of the development, spanning multiple organizations, made it challenging to manage and coordinate various internal aspects. Furthermore, I had to weigh the desired specifications against various factors such as technical challenges and available budget and timeframe, and prioritizing these aspects was difficult due to the project's large scale.

Iwata

Because the FAMS series has been sold for over 30 years, it was difficult to include all the features we've developed so far, and deciding which ones to keep and which to leave out was quite a challenge.

Conversely, what were the good things?

Shimazaki

As I mentioned earlier, I am personally pleased that I was able to contribute to the development of younger talent by utilizing my past experience. In the future, when we develop next-generation products, I hope that the younger members will use this experience as a foundation to create products that meet customer needs.

Inoue

Because of the large scale of the development project, I was able to connect with people from various departments with whom I hadn't had much interaction before, which was great. Also, after the product was released, we received a lot of praise from customers, which made me very happy.

Iwata

Like everyone else, I consider the experience of working on such a large-scale development project over several years to be an invaluable asset. Furthermore, I was able to work alongside the planning department from the initial concept development stage. Having previously mostly worked on modifying existing products, being involved in new product development was incredibly interesting.

It seems you gained a lot more than just the development results. Finally, could you tell us about your future prospects?

Inoue

While the basic platform for the product is complete, we believe further refinement is necessary to reach even greater heights. We will continue to work on adding and improving features that will bring joy to our customers.

Iwata

Because we've been working on this for so many years, I think we're able to notice even the smallest problems that our customers might be facing. It would be great if we could incorporate those into our products and create something that "only we can make."

Shimazaki

Yes, that's right. Development will continue, so I hope we can move forward while sharing the knowledge we've gained this time with the team members.

Iwata

I myself have moved from a development role to a team that handles customer-facing projects. First, I want to learn about the actual customer environment, and then in the next development project, I want to be able to set clear goals and lead the team effectively.
