Advanced Tachometer
FT-2500

Simple measurement of rotational speed from sound and vibration.

The FT-2500 advanced tachometer is a rotational meter that measures rotational speed from noise, vibration, or changes in magnetic flux generated by motors and various rotating machines.

By adopting FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) in the calculation unit, it can extract frequency components corresponding to rotational speed from complex waveform signals from microphones, sound level meters, and vibration sensors, and display the rotational speed.

With the incorporation of a new algorithm, the FT-2500 can accurately measure not only the steady rotation of motors and engines but also the acceleration and deceleration of rotation.

Features

  • No sensor installation processing or reflective marks needed.

  • Easy rotation measurement from sound or vibration - No processing of the rotation axis required.

  • With rotation direction detection function (when using FT-0501DC motor rotation detector)

  • In addition to the analog output function for rotational speed, a pulse output function corresponding to the rotational speed has been added.

  • RS-232C communication function is standard equipment.

Measurement Mode

Depending on the measurement content, you can select the measurement algorithm from the following 5 modes.
Modes C, D, and E follow acceleration and deceleration by processing internal calculations at high speed. Mode C predicts the expected peak even when the maximum peak is lost and calculates the rotational speed. In Mode E, the selection of rotational speed candidates can choose the optimal rotational speed from up to 8 frequency peaks.

Maximum Peak Frequency Method

Maximum Peak Frequency Method

Calculations are performed at the frequency of the maximum peak of the power spectrum. Typically, measurements are taken in this mode.

Frequency Interval Method

Frequency Interval Method

This is a method for determining rotational speed by sequentially calculating the frequency intervals of each degree component of rotation, and judging the most frequently occurring frequency interval as the primary component of rotational speed. It is effective when the primary peak is unstable.

Selection of rotation speed candidates

Selection of rotation speed candidates

Out of a maximum of eight power spectra, measurements will focus on any one of the power spectra's peak frequency.

Case Studies

Measurement of the rotation speed of the micro-rotation axis of a motor.

Measurement of the rotation speed of the micro-rotation axis of a motor.

You can easily measure the rotational speed of rotating shafts such as motors without reflective marks. For example, it is also possible to measure small rotating shafts where it is difficult to attach reflective marks or fan motors where the reflected light does not return straight.

It can be easily measured by simply inputting the number of fan blades.
Since it can be measured non-contact, it is suitable for measurements on inspection lines.

Determination of Rotation Direction and Measurement of Rotation Speed of General-Purpose DC Motor

Determination of Rotation Direction and Measurement of Rotation Speed of General-Purpose DC Motor

The FT-0501 detects the leakage magnetic flux of a general-purpose DC motor and extracts a frequency signal proportional to the rotational speed. Since it has two built-in coils, the two detected signals have a phase shift, and the principle of determining the rotation direction is based on that phase relationship. This is a very convenient feature for quality control of small DC motors, which are difficult to visually determine the direction. Of course, measuring the rotational speed is also possible.

With the two-phase output, it is also possible to determine the rotation direction.
It comes with a rotation direction determination output (semiconductor relay) that is convenient for CW and CCW judgment on inspection lines.

Compressors without a rotating shaft, used in household refrigerators, commercial vending machines, air conditioning units, and car air conditioners, can easily measure rotational speed with the combination of the FT-2500 and an acceleration pickup. The acceleration pickup (NP-3000 series) is mounted on an optional magnetic base (NP-0100, 0101) and is set in the best location by checking the signal in various places.

It is easy to measure the rotational speed of compressors without a rotating shaft.
It is possible to measure the rotational speed not only of the compressor alone but also when it is incorporated into the product.
This is suitable for lock determination during refrigerator lock tests.

Measurement of the rotational speed of a DC motor in a fuel pump using a current probe sensor.

Measurement of the rotational speed of a DC motor in a fuel pump using a current probe sensor.

DC motors, which are widely used in automotive electrical components, have their current consumption fluctuating in proportion to the number of poles. By detecting the current fluctuations of the DC motor with a current probe sensor and inputting that signal into the FT-2500, the rotational speed of the DC motor can be accurately measured. This method is suitable for measuring the rotational speed of standalone DC motors or motor-integrated products (components) like those found in automotive electrical equipment that allow for lead wire extraction.

Measurement of pump rotational speed using sound pressure

Measurement of pump rotational speed using sound pressure

The exhaust sound can be used to easily measure the pump's rotational speed. Generally, since the pump equipment does not have the rotating shaft exposed, conventional pulse detection methods for rotational measurement have been difficult. This example detects the exhaust sound with a microphone and performs rotational measurement.

It can be easily measured by simply setting the number of blades.
It is possible to measure the rotation of pumps without an exposed rotating shaft.

The electric toothbrush that converts the rotation of a DC motor into the vibration of a brush, the FT-2500, can measure the rotation speed by detecting the magnetic flux leaking from the built-in DC motor.

It detects the pulsation of the leakage magnetic flux proportional to the number of poles of the DC motor in the finished product.
It is convenient for OK, LOWER, and UPPER judgment on the line, with a two-stage comparator output for upper and lower limits.
Data management is also perfect with RS-232C.
System upgrades are possible at a low cost.

Rotational measurement using an engine rotation sensor.

By clamping a sensor to the primary low-voltage and secondary high-voltage wires of the automobile, the engine's rotational speed can be obtained. It can be measured simply by inputting the number of ignitions per revolution.

The pulse count sets the number of ignitions/explosions per revolution.
(Example) For a 4-cycle engine:
When measuring on the primary side, set the value to half the number of cylinders.
When measuring on the secondary side, set to 0.5P/R since there is 1 pulse for every 2 revolutions.

The rotational speed of small rotating bodies, such as fans, is measured. The vibration of the rotating body depends on the rotational motion. By measuring the frequency of the vibrations, the rotational speed of the body can be obtained.

Measurement of engine RPM from muffler sound

The exhaust sound of the car is used to measure the engine's rotational speed. The exhaust sound contains pulsating components caused by the engine's rotation. From the frequency components of those pulsations, it is possible to measure the engine's rotational speed.

The number of pulses is set to the number of ignitions/explosions per crankshaft rotation.
Depending on the performance of the exhaust, it may not be possible to measure.

Simultaneous measurement of the rotation speed and direction of the fuel pump.

Simultaneous measurement of the rotation speed and direction of the fuel pump.

Simultaneously measures the rotational speed of the fuel pump and determines its rotation direction. The fuel pump is used in various fields such as automobiles, but since it cannot be disassembled, direct measurement of the rotational speed and direction from the rotating shaft is not possible. Here, a leakage magnetic flux detector (FT-0501) is attached to the fuel pump to detect the leakage magnetic flux, and the periodically changing magnetic flux is calculated for frequency using an advanced tachometer (FT-2500), allowing for the measurement of the embedded motor's rotational speed and direction.

* Note
FT-2500 uses non-volatile memory for parameter storage. Non-volatile memory has a limit on the number of write cycles, and the non-volatile memory used in this device is approximately 1 million cycles. Under normal usage, it is unlikely to reach 1 million cycles, but if you frequently send numerical setting commands via RS-232C, it is expected to reach 1 million cycles. Please avoid such usage.
In addition, if an abnormality occurs in the non-volatile memory, "MEMORY ERROR!" will be displayed. If "MEMORY ERROR!" is displayed, memory replacement is necessary. We apologize for the inconvenience, but please request repairs at your nearest sales office or dealer.
*FT-0801: Discontinued
